I tried Civ 6 some more today. A bunch of starting over. I had one run that had a really good start, but I could tell it was gonna be a mess because I didn't have anywhere to expand. The AI really, really likes to very aggressively expand towards you and choke you out, and the barbarians are also really aggressive and annoying to deal with, way more than I remember them being in Civ 5 (where they were absolutely annoying but fairly easy to manage). It's kind of a shame, because I do like the civic tree and the changes to city-states, but the way you have to deal with the AI just feels so much more aggravating than I remember Civ 5 being.
